Panic in Detroit

François Carrière de Glencoe · 2023

This canvas borrows its title from David Bowie, but draws its inspiration from Rammstein's manifesto-song "Wollt ihr das Bett in Flammen sehen?" ("Do you want to see the bed in flames?") where the bed becomes a battleground, a theater of sex and fire. The canvas evokes a city in ruins, consumed by a destructive passion. The corrugated cardboard facades are flaming beds, pierced and riddled with holes. The red sky screams the violence of the battles—romantic, internal, collective. The forms waver between architecture and wounded bodies, while the red transforms destruction into an incandescent vision. The material bears the traces of a struggle where desire, anger, and pain merge. Conceived as a pictorial outlet, the work explores the cathartic function of art, in the tradition of the tragedies of ancient Greece. Painting here becomes the place where intensity is discharged, where chaos takes shape, and where the viewer is confronted with the ambivalent power of vivid human passions.
