Red Right Hand

Red Right Hand

François Carrière de Glencoe · 2023

A synthesis of collage, gesso, coffee, spray paint, acrylics, and inks, this blood-red canvas shatters the tranquility of the coffee tones, conveying a surge of vital emotion linked to my conflicted relationship with my mother.

The Virgin and Child sit enthroned above two candles, evoking both innocence and the Notre-Dame fire, reinforced by a skeleton firefighter before the shadow of the flying buttresses. An ovoid shape suggests a womb in gestation, while pieces of a gilded mop recall my mother's obsession with housework.

In the upper right, Tibetan lamas tagged with red spray paint mingle their presence with the symbolic blaze.

This scene illustrates my break with religious teachings that require an intermediary, in a setting poised to witness the collapse of the figure of the "Mother Goddess."
