You are WHO you eat
François Carrière de Glencoe · 2023
Initially conceived as a hyperrealistic still life—a piece of meat evoking the fragility of all animal life and the violence of the act of consumption—the work gradually metamorphosed. Within the saturated red of the material, a figure emerged: a Christ-like face, from the Passion. Blood becomes paint, flesh becomes a language, the crown of thorns encircled with gold unites sacrifice and transcendence.
The work brings several traditions into dialogue: Christianity, where the body offered as food becomes a symbol of salvation; Buddhism, which invites us to recognize in all sentient beings the same capacity to suffer and calls for compassion; and finally, veganism, as an ethic of refusal and reconciliation among the living.
Thus, the work does not simply depict a piece of meat, but questions our relationship to what we eat: what part of ourselves do we consent to sacrifice? The table becomes an altar, the everyday gesture, a ritual, poised between consumption and communion.
