La seconde mort, c'est l'étang de feu
François Carrière de Glencoe · 2025
In the Book of Revelation, the "lake of fire" signifies a second death: not the end of the body, but a state where what burns within finds no outlet.
The canvas transposes this image into an inner landscape. The thick, saturated red masses on the sides evoke a gradual immersion: a space where passion closes in on itself, where one becomes confined. The red becomes both water and fire, a drowning of love and a slow combustion.
At the center, a lighter axis resists. It does not save; it holds. A fragile verticality facing an emotional charge that has become excessive, almost atomic, made of fire, blood, and a love without echo.
The lake, at the bottom of the composition, does not reflect the sky: it gathers the traces, the falls, the residues of a drama lived and transformed into pictorial matter. The painting does not seek appeasement, but endurance—remaining upright at the heart of the conflagration.
