L' Enfer des bouchers
François Carrière de Glencoe · 2026
The work initially reveals itself as an abstract, material mass, where reds, blacks, browns, and whites intertwine. Gradually, ribs, bones, fragments of flesh, and, on the right, through pareidolia, tormented faces emerge. The gaze shifts from abstraction to a corporeal and unsettling reality.
On the left, a red hell unfolds, dominated by flesh and blood. A real knife, integrated into the painting, makes the violence tangible. On the right, a brown hell appears, evoking dried blood: a darker, more interior space, from which emerge the faces of the animals, like consciences imprisoned by torment.
Gesso mixed with paper creates an organic relief; acrylic paint builds the colors, and coffee deepens the browns. The material seems to have been wounded, torn away, and reconstructed.
The work thus questions our relationship to animal violence and the way we perceive it. Two hells mirror each other: that of the flesh and that of consciousness.
