Portrait d'Hortense, une chair amie
François Carrière de Glencoe · 2026
Created for the annual Gourmet Book Fair in Périgueux in 2026, this painting explores our relationship with meat consumption. With biting irony, it depicts a bourgeois woman, adorned with jewelry and a feather boa, devouring pork ribs. This gesture challenges the codes of elegance. Meat becomes more than just food: it attracts, fills the mouth, and reveals our contradictions. The black background highlights the vibrant colors of the face and arms, as well as the white and gray mass of the boa and the hair. Texture is omnipresent: the brushstrokes deposit the paint in thick, sensual touches. The boa mingles with the disheveled hair in an almost indistinct swirl, conveying the frenzy that the desire for meat arouses. This pictorial abundance echoes the meal and gives the image a physical dimension. Between social satire, unashamed pleasure, and questioning our food choices, the portrait invites us to look differently at what we consume in excess.
