Portrait de famille
François Carrière de Glencoe · 2023
Created like a family portrait, this canvas is above all a reflection of profound unease. The four figures, gathered in apparent closeness, still seem protected by reassuring, almost tender gestures. Yet, something is already at work: a slow erosion of bonds, which time ultimately imposes on even the most intimate relationships. Two children are present, as in real life, at the heart of this composition, which today takes on the dimension of an almost premonitory observation.
The deliberately crude figures, with their distorted features and fixed gazes, evoke puppets subject to a destiny beyond their control. Their bodies still seem connected, but their fragility is palpable. Around them, the background of old wallpaper, intentionally degraded and "rotten," acts as a metaphor for time: what was once familiar, warm, and protective is gradually deteriorating. The canvas thus carries a muted sadness, that of a balance already doomed.
